Grow cool-season vegetables in the fall

As most gardeners are busy harvesting many warm-season vegetables during the summer, it might be hard to believe that yet another vegetable season is just beginning, said a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

BCCD needs volunteers for Autumn Pioneer Festival

BELVIDERE - The Boone County Conservation District is in need of volunteers for the 29th Annual Autumn Pioneer Festival Saturday September 25-26. BCCD is looking for people 16 years or older who enjoy history, gardening and the outdoors. Volunteers will perform various tasks while dressed in period clothing. Openings are available in the areas of Heritage Garden Interpretation, Tomahawk Throw, Apple Butter, Buffalo Stew, Bean Soup, Greeters, and various other tasks. No special skills are needed. Volunteers will be required to work a minimum two-hour shift, and can work all day or all weekend shifts if desired.

There comes a time in midsummer when we realize that the garden is looking a little tired, but there are some things that can be done to perk up the garden so we can enjoy it for the whole season," said Sharon Yiesla, a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.
