BELVIDERE – A new approach to fundraising has Habitat For Humanity of Boone County hoping for sweet success.

The group recently held its Midsummer Fundraiser at the Belvidere Moose Family Center Park Pavilion.

Attendees could pay $5 to enjoy all-you-can-eat ice cream.

According to Dave Gooding, Habitat For Humanity of Boone County board chairman, the fundraiser was modeled after a similar event held in Boston.

Funds from the recent event will be used to help complete the latest Habitat For Humanity House currently being built 1246 East Second St. in Belvidere.

"Our goal is to sell out of ice cream, of course," Gooding said about the two-day event.

The Midsummer Fundraiser featured 15 different flavors of ice cream. Some were donated by dairy companies while others were purchased at cost.

Habitat For Humanity of Boone County also has served a mostaccoli dinner to help raise money for the latest build. An auction at the dinner netted $5,966 to put toward the Second Street home.

According to Gooding, Habitat For Humanity of Boone County received a grant that provided for 62 percent of the $80,000 required to build the program’s latest house.

The home will be occupied by Rob and Tisha Jones and their eight-year-old daughter, DJ. Construction at the site began in late May and will continue through September.

"These types of events are needed to raise money to complete the construction," Gooding said.

Additional fundraising efforts will be needed to raise enough money to cover the cost of the latest Habitat For Humanity home.

"We’re trying to get sponsors for a 5K run/walk," Gooding said.

The first ever Habitat For Humanity of Boone County 5K Run/Walk will be Oct. 2 in Belvidere. Prizes will be given to the top finishing times.
